Honda Recalling Nearly 900,000 Odyssey Minivans

In the wake of the GM recall, smaller vehicle recalls may go underreported. This does not mean, however, that they are any less dangerous. For example, Honda has just announced a recall for nearly 900,000 Odyssey minivans manufactured between 2005 and 2010. According to the company, the recall involves a fuel pump that can prematurely deteriorate, resulting in fire.

Honda will begin issuing notices to known owners this month, but the company states the part necessary for repairing the issue will not be available until the summer.

Defective Vehicles

Every day seems to bring more news of defective vehicles posing serious or life-threatening risks to drivers and passengers. Many of these defects are well known to the manufacturers, yet intentionally ignored – often long after injury has already occurred. This type of behavior has recently resulted in Toyota being given the largest fine in the history of defective vehicle claims by the Department of Justice. That that amount may be dwarfed by what GM is given once the extent of their negligence is known.

Sadly, trusting auto manufacturers is no longer a given, but knowing where to turn when you are injured by a defective vehicle can be. The Baltimore personal injury lawyers at our firm are here to take your case and fight for you, helping you get the total compensation you deserve.

Generic Drug Manufacturers Oppose FDA Label Proposal

The FDA has proposed label changes that would require generic drug manufacturers to update warning labels when new safety concerns come to light, even if those label changes have not first been made by the original manufacturer of the medication.

The Generic Pharmaceutical Association, a trade group representing generic drug manufacturers, claims the proposed changes would raise the cost of medication and expose off-brand producers to more dangerous medication lawsuits. The FDA claims these changes would create parity by placing equal responsibility on all manufacturers of a medication.

Not Actively Monitoring Safety Concerns

Supporters of the proposed change cite that there is no longer a brand equivalent for approximately 45 percent of the medications currently on the market. Because generic manufacturers are not required to actively monitor safety concerns, that means that around 45 percent of the drugs available today may pose much larger risks than the manufacturers are telling consumers about.

However, because generic manufacturers are not required to update safety information unless it has first been done so by the original manufacturer, victims of these medications are often unable to collect damages following injury. New regulations would make these manufacturers responsible for misleading consumers or failing to provide full information about all of a medication’s potential side-effects.

New Dog Bite Case Presents Interesting Hurdles

A nationally reported dog bite case is showing just how complex these types of accidents can be. A four-year-old boy, mauled by a neighbor’s dog after wandering into its yard, needs tens of thousands of dollars of reconstructive surgery and has endured untold pain and suffering. Nonetheless, thousands have rallied around the dog, claiming it was simply doing what dogs do and neither the animal nor its owner should be held accountable for the child’s disfigurement.

An attorney working pro bono for the dog states that the animal attacked the child only after the boy attempted to take its ball. The attorney states liability should be placed on the child’s babysitter who failed to keep the boy away from the dog. The boy’s parents and attorney argue that an animal who will maul a child over a ball is not safe to be around people and that the animal should be put down.

Liquid Nicotine Increases Risks of Poisoning

According to the National Poison Data Center, accidental poisonings from nicotine have jumped in recent years. In 2013, 1,351 poisonings were linked directly to e-liquid, the liquid form of nicotine used in e-cigarettes. This was a 300 percent increase of accidental poisonings from the year before. Of the poisonings reported in 2013, nearly 400 resulted in hospitalization, three-times the number as the year prior. Many of the victims of nicotine poisoning are children who have absorbed the liquid through the skin.

An Accident Waiting to Happen

Nicotine is a dangerous drug linked to addiction. In controlled amounts, this drug is a stimulant. In uncontrolled amounts, it can lead to nausea, seizures, and even death. Because it can be absorbed through the skin, parents who use e-cigarettes must be extra vigilant when using refillable cartridges. Children are particularly vulnerable to the adverse effects of nicotine.

There is currently little to no regulation on e-liquid. Nearly anyone can buy it and the containers in which it comes needn’t meet any specific safety requirements. What’s more, strong or highly visible warning labels aren’t required on these products, which can greatly increase the risk of accidental overuse.

If you or someone you love has been injured by a poorly labeled product, you may be entitled to seek compensation. We would be happy to assess your case free of charge to help you determine if you have cause to file suit.
